Snapshot of the AFL

There are 18 teams in the Australian Football League (AFL), but due to teams sharing stadiums there are only nine AFL home venues. Some teams also play select 'home' games at other Australian cities, including Hobart, Cairns, Darwin, Canberra and Alice Springs. The AFL evolved from the Victoria Football League (VFL), which is why half of the 18 AFL teams are based in Melbourne. The nine Melbourne teams play in only two stadiums; five at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and four at the Marvel (Docklands) Stadium.

Essendon, Carlton & Collingwood are the most successful teams with 16 Premierships each. But overall success has been fairly evenly distributed with 15 of the 18 teams have at least one premiership win.

The AFL is extremely popular, and has an average game attendance of 32,000 (which is the 4th highest for a sports league globally) and will expand to 19 teams in 2028 with the arrival of a Tasmanian franchise.
