Major League Soccer has gone from strength-to-strength since its reincarnation in 1998. With the introduction of Los Angeles Football Club for the 2018 season, the league now has 23 teams and a number of world class players. New York City FC and the L.A Galaxy are by far the most popular teams with close to 2 million online fans each. As these two cities are the most populated in the U.S, it isn't greatly surprising that their Soccer franchises are the best supported. The L.A Galaxy are also the most successful MLS team, with 5 MLS Cups to their name. Fan numbers are fairly well distributed amongst the remaining 21 teams in the league, ranging from 140,000 up to 700,000.
Team success has some statistical relevance to popularity, with recent MLS Cup winners Toronto FC (2017) the Seattle Sounders (2016) and the Portland Timbers (2015) all in the top half of the popularity table. The least popular teams are Minnesota United and Philadelphia Union (two fairly recent expansion franchises) along with the San Jose Earthquakes.
