Watching football in London

A guide to watching professional football in London, with an interactive map showing where the football teams play, advice on how to get match tickets and information how much tickets cost.

There are a staggering *13 professional football teams based in London across England's top four full-time leagues, which means there is always an opportunity to watch a live football game in the capital on any given weekend during the season (August - May). With the exception of the top premiership teams the large majority of English Football matches don't sell out, so you can often turn-up at the stadium and pay on the day.

*The 13 teams do not even include Watford FC which is not technically in London but is within the M25 and on the tube network so it could arguably be included as well.

Even with most popular clubs (Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham & West Ham) obtaining a ticket is possible if you know the right routes to follow and are prepared to pay over face value for the experience. All of the top teams have official resale procedures either via commercial partners (such as stub hub) or within the clubs own ticketing structure.

When choosing what match to watch it's important to remember that premier league football does not necessarily provide the best match-day experience. The stadiums will be fuller and the players will be better (in theory) but the lower down the league structure you venture the higher the concentration of authentic fans will be. There is also no legal requirement for teams in Leagues one and two to have all-seater stadiums and some terracing (standing areas) still exist at a few grounds. Watching a match in a terraced area provides a different kind of atmosphere, and celebrating a goal by hugging the random next to you is always a good laugh.

As well as matches at the weekend (predominately Saturday afternoon at 3:00), there are also midweek games, either on a Tuesday or Wednesday night. We prefer weekend games over midweek games as the atmosphere during the week is usually more subdued and there are smaller numbers of travelling supporters.
